Seeing as I've cut through the main game and put a little bit of a dent into the post game, now I suppose is as good a time as any to post my team for my first Gen 5 playthrough.
MAIN TEAM
Pantera: L59 F Scrafty (Ability: Moxie)
Crunch / Dragon Claw / Rock Slide / Hi-Jump Kick
The shining star of my team. Scrafties are awesome tanks and thanks to Moxie, damn good sweepers all at once, especially with the type coverage she has. However, given how offense-biased 5th gen is, falls over if looked at funny by one of her (only two!) weaknesses - Flying or its own STAB Fighting. Named after the heavy metal band, obviously, and because a Scraggy/Scrafty's most defining feature is PAAAAANTS. Rest in peace, Dimebag.
Moguri: L59 F Excadrill (Ability: Sand Force)
Swords Dance / Poison Jab / Rock Slide / Earthquake
Swords Dancer #1. Nice Attack and Speed, Swords Dance, and the best goddamn offensive STAB typing in the game. Earthquake may not be as broken as it was in gens 1-4, given that the offensive game has been stepped up quite a bit, but no, Earthquake is still pretty fucking broken. Named after a portmanteau of "Meguri" and the romanized Japanese for 'mole' ("Mogura"). That it in turn ends up sharing the romanized Japanese name for moogles is entirely coincidental, I assure you. </notfoolinganyone>
Cheerilee: L57 F Leavanny (Ability: Swarm)
Swords Dance / Return / X-Scissor / Leaf Blade
Swords Dancer #2. Grass/Bug is a horrible defensive typing, but it gets a surprising coverage for its STAB moves. Plus, Leaf Blade is awesome. Named after the vintage My Little Pony, because FiM has made me a pony nerd, and because Leavanny is a happiness evolution.
Nazca: L54 M Sigilyph (Ability: Magic Guard)
Psychic / Air Slash / Ice Beam / Thunder Wave
Basically there to fill the holes in my team, most notably in that it's the first in the group not to take super-effective damage from one of its own STABs (Pantera, being part Dark, is weak to Fighting. Moguri, being part Steel, is weak to Ground. Cheerilee, being part Grass, is weak to Bug.) and also my main means of dealing with Fighting types. As long as they don't have Rock moves, which... a lot of Fighting types have this generation. Sigh. Named after the famous Nazca Lines, which I'm pretty damn sure inspired Sigilyph's design.
Anatsu: L52 M Samurott (Ability: Torrent)
Surf / Waterfall / Grass Knot / Ice Beam
Can that moveset get any more "generic water starter"? Herp. Not sure what to do with him, as he's good but he's not really pulling his weight. Might eventually replace with a Staryu. Name is a portmanteau of 'anathema' (because everybody hated on Oshawott before the game came out, thus leading to why I picked him as a starter) and 'tsunami' (because Water starter - a really unfortunate choice considering the past few days). Name chosen because it sounds faux-Japanese, hurr.
Saratoga: L51 F Chandelure (Ability: Flame Body)
Inferno / Telekinesis / Flamethrower / Shadow Ball
First post-game replacement, required a South Park styled MONTAGE to build up to match the rest of the team. Especially since Litwick is pretty darn terrible, being too slow to kill enemies and too fragile to take a hit. Named after the Light of Saratoga, one of America's most famous ghost lights.
HONORABLE MENTION
Angel: L50 F Audino (Ability: Regenerator)
Return / Attract / Fire Blast / Refresh
Initially the team's tank, a kind of Neo-Blissey. Unfortunately, with the post-game level jump meaning that enemies killed you in a lot fewer hits than before, she rarely even had a chance to get off an Attract before she got a OHKO up the face. Audino's terrible offenses made her lag behind to the point where she started carrying moves that nobody else would touch (such as Flash for illuminating caves). Not wanting to treat one of my main group this way, she got shelved for Saratoga. Named after fellowAudinoTabunne-just-sounds-better-dammit lover,
bottlemilk's AIM name.
Bananasaur: L60 M Tropius
Strength / Fly / Cut / Flash
Post-game HM Slave #1. Tropius has always been the BEST HM slave, notable for being one of the few 'mons with access to both Fly AND Strength. And Flash, since there's only 6 HMs in B/W. Obtained so that I could replace Fly with a Special Attack based move on Nazca. One of these days I'll use one of the damn bananasaurs legitimately, but today is not the day. Name origin should be obvious.
SWIMFISH: L52 F Luvdisc
Swim / Surf / Waterfall / Sweet Kiss
Post-game HM Slave #2. LOOK MOM, LUVDISCS ARE USEFUL FOR SOMETHING! hurr. Obtained so that I could use Dive without wasting ANOTHER slot on Anatsu. Name comes from the fact it swims, and it's a fish. (Hurr.)
