I really wish I knew what it was about Minutes To Midnight. I love Meteora and Hybrid Theory, I love A Thousand Suns... but I cannot stand Minutes to Midnight. It's a boring spot on Linkin Park's otherwise awesome record. Ah well, meme.

DAY 5: A Game That Reminds You Of Someone

This... this is a seriously hard one. I don't really THINK of people when I play games; it's more that talking to certain people reminds me of games I've played. For example, [livejournal.com profile] oftendistracted makes me think of Star Ocean 2 since we played in an RP together based on the game. [livejournal.com profile] miishal reminds me of .hack and most of my RP buddies now remind me of Sonic, due to them being their main fandoms. In the end, I came to two games that remind me of the same person for the same reason.

Back before I'd ever moved to Texas, met DeAnna, and so forth, I had lived at my mom's house, and another gamer friend from high school named Scott lived with me as a renter. He was the one with all the newer systems like (at the time) the PS2, Dreamcast, and XBox, whereas I had my jaunty jalopy PSX and the SNES, NES, and the entire Genesis monstrosity (32X, Sega CD, the works).

Now, anyone who knows me knows that I love BOTH of these games. However, I was already a Suikoden fan when 2 came out, and I snagged a copy as soon as it was available, played the unholy hell out of it. Scott had a copy of Destiny, which I played eventually and subsequently fell in complete and utter love with the Tales series, a love that would extend until Legendia killed it with mediocrity and Namco hating America. Back then, I had offered him a trade - one I didn't think through too clearly since, hey, I was in fanboy mode and I figured he'd stay in the household so it wasn't a problem.

The trade was such: He got ownership of Suikoden 2, I got ownership of Tales of Destiny. This was a very bad idea for one reason and one reason alone: cost.

Tales of Destiny was one of Namco's "experiments" - in this case, they were very first testing the waters for how popular the Tales series would be in America after cost of translation shut us out from getting Phantasia. It got a small run, but at the same time, wasn't all that popular due to its flaws, the least of which was not its HORRENDOUS, Skies of Arcadia level random encounter rate. They did not expect it to sell well, and weren't surprised.

Suikoden 2, on the other hand, was a successor to what was, at the time, one of the Playstation's only RPGs - back when Suiko 1 came out, your other options were FF7 or Beyond the Beyond. That alone gave it a fanbase on potential nostalgia alone. Then you add in the fact that, even in SPITE of Konami coding the game and its localization out of tissue paper, it is by and FAR the most beloved of the series even now, and arguably one of the most beloved RPGS on the PS1 period. It got about the same production life as Destiny, maybe a little smaller, but its demand is at least four times that of Destiny.

Tales of Destiny, as a benchmark, runs for about "new game price" (read: $30-$50) on eBay nowdays.

Suikoden 2 runs for about $200 to $300 and up.

For that reason, and that reason alone, the remarkably bad business decision reminds me of him whenever I play either of those games or even really think about them.

"wonky changes" meaning "slow as sin" and "encounter rate WORSE than Skies of Arcadia", yes?

To be honest, I can't suss the changes in the Suik 3 battle system. That made Suik 5's return to the older system a breath of fresh air for me.
