So, I have no excuse for owning this except "I wanted to own it". I saw a TieTuesday running it on his streams, was instantly drawn in to the concept, and tapped into my credit to get it. Even though it's in Early Access, even though it's $16.
I think I'm happy with the purchase already.
The game purports that it's a "roguelike cardgame" and that just makes me roll my eyes so hard you can hear them rattling in my skull. If you'd tried to sell me on the copy alone, I would have been out the door already. In the most technical sense it's right - it's what would happen if Dominion and Binding of Isaac had a kid. You start at the bottom of a (currently three "stage"/50 floor) tower in one of the two classes (your tank/melee Ironclad and your speedy/evasive Silent) with a handful of basic cards. After a battle, you get a smattering of treasure - consumable potions that offer buffs, a pittance of gold - and your choice of one of three random cards. As of such, the gameplay is based around building your deck - which is to say, your attack/defense options - as you go, almost in a style similar to games like KH: Chain of Memories, except far less obnoxious and also far more turn-based. Occasionally, you find relics, which give you passive boosts like "more strength" or "your defensive buffs don't wear off after a turn", which lets you tweak and tailor your strategy further.
It's surprisingly deep for a game that's only 200 cards, two classes, and a handful of enemies in. And it's only looking to get deeper.
If I had any complaints about it, it's that it's a fair bit grindy - unlocks are based on score, and there's six per class... and those six will take a good, long while to grind out. Then again, in a game with replay value, that's not really as much of a negative as you'd think.
Definitely keep an eye on this one, even if you're gunshy about investing in Early Access.
Best purchase I've personally made since Sonic Mania, I feel.
