Posting this a little less than twelve hours after since, hey, Saturday's my late shift day, and I have to go in for a nine hour shift in an hour and a half! Hooray.

DAY 2: The Most Underrated Game You’ve Ever Played

Look at that box. Look at it. Now tell me what you'd expect it to be, just based on the box art and title. If you said "a cheap Professor Layton cash-in", you'd have what I originally thought about the game. If you said "a generic match-3 game"... well, you'd be half-right.

Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure is half oldschool 2D platforming game, half Panel De Pon (the game America knows as Tetris Attack and Planet Puzzle League), and much like Rhythm Heaven yesterday, it's both a game that I was afraid to pay money for before I played it (and subsequently bought after playing the ROM) and is also digital crack.

The premise is simple - the world 'exists' in two seperate states, the top platform game and the bottom puzzle game, and you can toggle between the two at any time. Enemies killed in the platform game turn into blocks/tiles in the puzzle, which must be disposed of before they reach the top of the screen or else they'll come back in their new blocky form and really ruin your day. Your powerups (free lives, health refills, etc) also show up on the puzzle side of the game, so it's best to keep an eye on it now and then.

Part of the game's charm is that its characters are insufferably, some might almost say outlandishly, stereotypical. The spoken 'dialogue' in this game is just a Simlish mashup of stereotypical noises, the titular character talking in "i say"s and "pip pip"s and "eh wot" and the like (His death cry is even a decidedly British "Poppycock!"), his plucky child sidekick throwing in a "guvn'r" now and then, with the other characters being equally ridiculous. The game is also on a hefty dose of WTF: as far as the story goes, well... I will just write it pure and simple, right here.

You are a Gentleman Adventurer seeking out pieces of the most magnificent gentleman's suit ever. These wardrobe pieces are inexplicably gold and will grant the power to rule the world. Also, one of your powers is to transform into an invincible, tea-powered robot.

One more notable facet of this game? It is hard. We're talking Ninja Gaiden, Prinny: Can I Really Be The Hero?, Mega Man Zero, etc etc balls-to-the-wall tear-out-your-hair difficult. The first world is fairly simple stuff, until you reach your first boss... which is basically just a giant chunk of health to wear down. Then, suddenly, the platforming becomes harder, the regular enemies become more sinister, and there's more of them...

By the time I got to the 4th world, it was taking me several days of playing to get through a single level, let's just put it that way. And it's rather fairly difficult, too - very rarely are there CHEAP deaths, health refils are incredibly plentiful, and your trips to the puzzle half of the game pause the platforming action, so you don't have to "juggle" them per se like you do in other games of the "two things at once" mindset like The World Ends With You.

Come for the interesting premise, stay for the eye-blistering difficulty. ♥
